Dunvegan Castle
Dunvegan Castle consists of a massive 14th century keep, and a 16th century tower known as the
Fairy Tower and built by Alasdair MacLeod. The castle has been continuously occupied by the chiefs
of  MacLeod since 1270, and it is still owned by the 29th Chief of MacLeod. Dunvegan is home to the
famous Fairy Flag, and there are many legends surrounding this piece of silk.
The castle  was completely restored in 1840-50, a fire in 1938 required further repairs.

  Dumbarton Castle
Dumbarton Castle
Little  remains of the original Dumbarton Castle except
for the 14th century entrance, the rest is from a
relatively "newer" 18th and 19th century.
Meaning "Fortress of the Britons", Dumbarton is
first mentioned around 450 as the stronghold of
the Kings of Strathclyde. In  756 it was captured
by the Picts and the Northumbrians, and in 870 by
Irish raiders. Later on Dumbarton became a royal
castle and William Wallace was held here before
being taken to London for execution in 1305.
