castle, now a very ruinous state, with the
main wall shown here, being the most intact.
Robert the Bruce was born in a castle close
by and later on he besieged Lochmaben after
the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.
Lochmaben was built in 1298 by Edward the Ist.
The ghost is rumored to have been a
daughter of the then laird, who had
been dallying with a servant. It appears
she was murdered to hide her pregnancy.
A skeleton of a young woman and infant
was said to have been uncovered during
If it had ever been finished, this would have
been one of the finest medieval castles
in Europe. But just as it neared completion
in the late 1200's, it was caught up in the
fiercest stage of the conflicts between
England and Scotland.

restored by the Menzies Clan Society, is open to the public.
Seat of the Chiefs of Clan Menzies for over 400 years
the castle was involved in the turbulant history of the
Highlands. Bonnie Prince Charlie rested
on his way to Culloden in 1746.
