1600's. The castle is a stronghold of the
O'Flaherties ,one of the principal native
Irish dynasties of the region. In 1572, the
castle was given to an O'Flaherty after
he aided the English President of the
province in capturing it.
Located in Co. Galway.
Castle is a ruined gothic castle. The town
of Clifden was founded in 1812 by the local
landowner John d'Arcy, a descendent
of an Anglo Norman family who converted
from Roman Catholicism to avoid
dispossession under the Penal Laws.
One can also hike down and walk around
the castle. The inside is closed off as
it is not a stabilized ruin. Located
in Clifden, Connemara, Co. Galway.

in, but nothing concrete is known about it's history.
